Do you know what BBB accreditation means?

Author: Dustin Johnson

BBB AccreditedYour BBB Serving Greater Kansas City has been in existence since 1916 supported by local businesses who meet and agree to BBB standards. We used to call them BBB members. Now we use the term BBB Accredited Business.

So what is does it mean when a company is BBB accredited?

  • Does it mean that the business’ products or services have been evaluated or endorsed by BBB, or that BBB has made a determination as to the business’ product quality or competency in performing services?
  • Does it mean accredited businesses are provided special protection against complaints?
  • Does it mean all non-accredited are bad companies or will not be able to have an A+ rating?
  • Does it mean that accreditation can be bought?

Our answer for all of these commonly asked questions is “No”.

So what does BBB accreditation mean?
It means the business has submitted an application and BBB has determined, through a review process, that the business meets BBB’s Code of Business Practices which represents sound advertising, selling and customer service practices that enhance customer trust and confidence in a business.

Not every business is eligible for BBB Accreditation.
Businesses must meet, commit to and maintain the BBB Code of Business Practices (Accreditation Standards) in order to be eligible for and maintain BBB Accreditation.  Last year, BBB Serving Greater Kansas City denied 75 applications and revoked accreditation from 9 businesses for failure to maintain BBB’s Code of Business Practices.

The BBB Standards for Trust are eight principles that summarize important elements of creating and maintaining trust in business. Our BBB Code of Business Practices is built on these standards.
